Catcher Brian Schneider and outfielder Ryan Church were traded to the Mets by the Nationals for outfielder Lastings Milledge. Schneider is regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in the game. Church hit .272 with 15 homers and 70 RBI last season. Milledge hit .272 with seven homers and 29 RBI in 184 at-bats in 2007. . That is all

Michael Dukakis lost his bid for the White House in small part because he stumbled in his response to the Willie Horton saga. Horton was a convicted killer who, out of prison on a weekend pass in 1987, tortured and raped a Maryland woman. Dukakis’ failure to exhibit due and swift outrage helped elect the first President Bush.

 Evel Knievel, the motorcycle stuntman whose daredevil exploits made him an international icon, has died in Florida. He was 69 and had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for some years. By the time of his retirement, he had broken almost forty bones, including his back seven times, spent at least a month in a coma in 1968 and nearly died a number of times. Robert Craig Knievel had retired in 1981.
